Worship God’s Way – Healing the Soul
I’m in the process of rereading Richard Eyer’s book “They Will See His Face” which focuses on liturgy and God using the Divine Service to heal and feed the soul. The following may seem like “old hat” for many, but it is good to be reminded of it. For those new to “Lutheran worship,” it is a good introduction to worship.
In worship, some things may seem strange and even feel awkward until we come to understand the truth and benefit that results from doing things that way. It is important to remember that worship is not what we like to do, but what God has chosen to do for our benefit. Worship is primarily God’s action in our lives through Word and Sacraments and only secondarily our action in response to that as prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. The attitude that makes the worshiper, rather than God, the judge of what is essential in worship risks missing what God is trying to give us. (They Will See His Face, Richard Eyer pg 8-9)
