LSB Lectionary Summaries

The beginning of the new Church Year is quickly upon us.  In preparation for this, the LCMS Commission on Worship appears to be initiating a weekly series of lectionary summaries on both the one-year and three-year LSB lectionaries for use in the parish.  Take a look.

lectionaryThese Lectionary Summaries are designed to be included in Sunday bulletins for worshippers to read prior to the service. As such, they provide a thematic summary of the readings for each Sunday and festival, as well as a description of how the readings fit into the particular season of the Church Year, where appropriate.

These summaries are provided free of charge and may be edited as needed for local use. They will normally be posted two to four weeks in advance. (LCMS Commission on Worship)

These summaries could also distributed the week prior so that worshippers could prepare themselves throughout the week by reading the lectionary texts and the summary.

  1. I plan all the music for our small church: choir, Praise service, tone chimes. All of this is done in the summer. It would be nice to just have the summaries of the readings for each lectionary series available all the time! I printed the year’s schedule B readings for 2011-2012, but I’d like to see the summaries now! In the past I’ve looked each Bible selection up, but it would be nice to just see the readings summarized!

    • Thanks Judy. Yes . . . the LCMS Worship site seems to be posting the lectionary summaries in batches just as they are written. Perhaps once they’ve gotten through all of the lectionary series they will have them all posted.

One suggestion that may be helpful in your worship planning is CPH’s new Series B Worship Planner for 2011-2012. The sampler indicates a number of resources — short summaries of each lesson, a paragraph on the theme of the day, suggested hymns, collect, suggested choral and instrumental pieces from the CPH catalog. Some of the ideas are redundant from the Hymn Selection Guide and Propers for the Day.
