Resources

This page contains resources that I have found useful primarily in my study, understanding, and practice of Lutheran worship.  Occasionally you might find an eclectic item that might seem out of place — enjoy it anyways!

Audio Resources

  • Daily Prayer – A list of daily or weekly programs of Morning Prayer and Compline.
  • Sacred Music Recordings – Suggestions for recordings you might like to add to your library.
  • Sacred Music – Online Streaming – A list of sacred music radio programs available for listening on the internet. Producers range from St. Olaf College, KFUO-FM, BBC, and more.

Lutheran Service Book

  • Lutheran Service Book: Propers of the Day – Provides a list of the scripture lessons, introit, collect, gradual, and verse for each Sunday and festival in the one-year and three-year LSB lectionaries. This resource is helpful for service planning or for a choir singing/leading the Propers.
  • Lutheran Service Book: Additional Indexes – I have created a series of indexes that provide greater detail on the association of hymn tunes in Lutheran Service Book.  These indexes are available for downloading.

Hymn Selection Helps

  • LSB Hymn Selection Guide – Provides hymn suggestions related to the scripture lessons for each Sunday and festival in the one-year and three-year LSB lectionaries. There are also indices to help find hymns based on scripture texts and which scripture texts are used for each Sunday or festival.
  • Rev. Henry Gerike provides a list of suggested hymns for lectionary Series A, B, and C.  The 2011 Series A PDF is available here (look for LSB Lectionary Hymns).  He is Kantor at Church of the Reformation in Afton, MO and director of choirs and musical activities at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.
  • Rev. Rick Stuckwisch provides on his blog suggested hymns for both the three-year series and the historic one-year series.

Lutheran Worship Websites

  • LCMS Worship/Prayer – While the effect of the 2010 LCMS restructuring effort resulted in the elimination on the LCMS Commission on Worship, this is the official worship site for the LCMS. Ideally it would be updated more frequently. If you’re willing to do some detective work, the article archives can be useful.
  • Good Shepherd Institute – The Institute is affiliated with Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN. I highly recommend the Institute’s mission and the resources that they produce. Each November they have a conference and eventually produce a journal of articles available for purchase through the seminary bookstore. Their bi-annual newsletter (usually published around September and March of each year) His Voice has a variety of suggested books, CDs, and organ and choral music. The Singing the Faith DVD is top notch.
  • WELS Commission on Worship – The official worship site for the WELS. Unfortunately, in their site redesign it appears that most all of the previous available resources are only accessible if you have a login name and password.
  • ELCA Worship – While I certainly don’t agree with many things in the ELCA, their worship site does have several tidbits that may be useful when read with discernment. Particularly the Frequently Asked Questions in the Music section, the Frequently Asked Questions in the Learning Center, and the seasonal worship planning helps.
  • ELCIC Worship – Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada that is affiliated with the ELCA. I have been most intrigued with a 14-year series of articles (that is still produced) entitled Worship Workbench by Pastor Paul Bosch. He tackles a host of worship related issues from the use of candles, placement of baptismal fonts, altars, lecterns, church architecture, sound systems, bulletins, etc. Read with a discerning eye, he has some useful thoughts/ideas and will at times make you laugh.
